NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/20/2009 - Spokane, WA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Steven Gray scored a career-high 23 points, as the 17th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs blew out Loyola Marymount, 91-54, at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

With the victory, Gonzaga (20-5, 11-0 WCC) won its ninth consecutive West Coast Conference regular season title and earned the top seed in the league tournament. The Bulldogs' ninth consecutive league title extended the longest active streak in the nation, while Gonzaga is tied the Kentucky teams of 1944-52 for the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. UCLA holds the record with 13 straight league titles from 1967-79.

"Our guys came out and had a great effort tonight," said Gonzaga coach Mark Few. "I thought they did a great job sticking with the plan. They really wanted to share the ball tonight, move it around and get everybody going. We did that and at the same time our defensive mentality was pretty good."

Gonzaga can clinch the WCC outright with a win against Pepperdine on Saturday.

"We still have plenty left to accomplish, we want to win the WCC outright and continue to improve our NCAA resume these final weeks," said Few.

Josh Heytvelt added 18 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs, who have won at least 20 games for a 12th consecutive season. Micah Downs ended with 16 points and six boards, while Austin Daye had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Zags.

Kevin Young and Vernon Teel scored 13 points apiece to pace the Lions (2-25, 1-10). Jarred DuBois finished with nine points, while LaRon Armstead had eight points and grabbed seven boards.

The Bulldogs took control of the game from the outset, starting the game on a 17-2 run, during which Daye had seven points.

Ahead 28-16, Gonzaga scored nine consecutive points to extend its lead to 37-16 with under two minutes left in the half, and the Bulldogs went into the break with a 41-22 lead.

Gonzaga outscored Loyola Marymount 50-32 in the second half, shooting 54.8 percent, to turn the game into a blowout.

Game Notes

Gonzaga shot 50.8 percent from the field overall, while Loyola Marymount hit just 31.7 percent of its shots...The Bulldogs went 18-of-21 from the foul line, compared to 7-of-12 for the Lions...Gonzaga holds a commanding 52-20 series advantage over Loyola Marymount, which includes a 93-60 romp over the Lions last month...The Bulldogs are 61-3 in the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
