Matsui, Angels use long ball to down Mariners

09/02/2010 - Seattle, WA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Hideki Matsui belted the go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning and Alberto Callaspo tacked on a solo shot the following frame, as the Angels beat Seattle, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Trevor Bell (2-4) allowed nine hits and two runs over six innings in the start for the Angels, who won for just the third time in 10 games. Fernando Rodney notched his eighth save.

Franklin Gutierrez had the lone RBI for the Mariners, who faltered to their eighth defeat in 11 contests.

Jason Vargas (9-8) gave up four hits and three runs over seven frames and lost this third straight start.

Mike Napoli doubled with one out in the seventh, and with two down, Matsui drilled an 0-1 offering over the wall in right for his 18th homer of the year and a 3-2 lead.

Callaspo homered to right off Sean White with two outs in the eighth.

Reggie Willits doubled to start the game and scored later in the first on a groundout from Howie Kendrick.

Seattle wasted a chance with runners at second and third and one out in the bottom of the frame, but evened the contest in the third. Chone Figgins singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Gutierrez base hit to left.

The Mariners loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but came away with just one run when Gutierrez grounded into a double play. Russell Branyan fanned, leaving a runner at third.

The hosts again failed with a man at third in the sixth as Adam Moore struck out to end the inning.

Game Notes

The Angels moved to 12-4 this season against the Mariners. The teams will play a final series September 10-12 in Anaheim...Prior to the game, the Angels reinstated pitchers Jason Bulger and Brian Stokes from the 15-day disabled list. The team also acquired pitcher Loek Van Mil to complete an earlier trade with Minnesota...The Mariners are only 6-23 in the game after Felix Hernandez pitches including 2-17 over the last 19 games.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
